4 Nov. 2011 : SYMI - RHODOS
Panormitis (SYMI) - RHODOS
Weather : Sunny ca.21°C
Wind : NNE 3 Bf, decreasing to 1 Bf in the afternoon
After a night at anchor & a morning-swim (for some of the crew),
we hauled anchor at 9.50h.
The first half of the trip we had a very nice sail, with a beam reach.
The last part of the trip the engine had to help us out,
because the wind died down.
At ca.14.40h we arrived in the Mandraki-harbour of Rhodos.
The staff of Istion (Thomas) did a prompt and quick check-out,
so at 15.45h our boat was cleared for check-out (everything was OK).
We filled up the Diesel-tank : 46 Liter / ca.72 Euro.
Afterwards we visited the impressive old town of Rhodos, a must !
Taverna-tip : Nireas (Odos Sofokleous - Rhodos Old Town),
it's a nice fish-restaurant, in the backstreets of the old town.
(ca.120 Euro / 6 pers).
Summary :
Sailing in Rhodos the first week of november is recomended,
the climate is mild (day 20°C/night 17°C) and the wind can be unpredictable,
but was very reliable blowing from the N this week.
Almost every harbour is nearly empty, so no worries to get space in the harbours.
In every harbour some taverna's were still opened, as were the supermakets and bakeries.
A small disadvantage is that the days are a lot shorter than in summermonths.

3 nov. 2011 : TILOS - SYMI
Weather : Sunny ca.20°C
Wind : NNE 4-5 Bf
At 9.45h we left Livadhia, we decided to sail to Panormitis on Symi,
instead of sailing to Halki.
The wind was blowing with force 4 to 5 BF from the NNE, which create
some considerable waves, coming in on the side of the ship, this in
combination with a tight reach created a bumpy but fast ride on to
Symi...nice sailing ;-)
At ca.14.30h we anchored in the bay of Panormitis, in the South of Symi.
Some of us ventured a swim in the sea, watertemp. 21°C.
Tommorow our last Sailingday, destination Rhodos.

2 nov. 2011 : NISIROS - TILOS
Pali (NISIROS) - Livadhia (TILOS)
Weather : More Clouds than sun ca.19°C
Wind : N 1-2 Bf
At 9.45h we left Pali, there were many clouds and nearly no wind.
So we had to go on engine the entire trip to Tilos.
After 22 N.M. we arrived at 13.00h in the harbour of Livadhia on Tilos.
The harbour now has moorings and there are connections for power and water,
we where kindly greeted by the Harbourmaster, a friendly women who speeks german very good.
We payed 18 Euro harbourfee (incl. 200 liter water and powersupply).
For the moment we're the only visiting yacht in the harbour.
In the afternoon we took the bus to Megalo Horio, where we visited the museum dedecaded to the skeleton of a midget-elephant, in a cave on Tilos they found a lot of skeletons from these elephants.
Afterwards we visited a beautifull church.

1 Nov. 2011 : Nisiros
Pali (NISIROS)
Weather : Clouds and sun ca.19°C
Wind : N 1 Bf
Last evening we had a nice dinner at "Aphrodite" (ca.14 Euro),
they also offer free WI-FI and showers (3 €).
Today we rented some motorbikes at "Captains Bikes" at 8 Euro pro bike,
the bikes where in good shape, altough it is the end of season.
First we visited the volcano of Nisiros, we where alone there.
It's magnificent, simply incredible, you walk around in a volcanic-crater that's still alive !
It's a must !
Afterwards we visited the nearly abadoned village of Emborio.
To end our trip we visited the capital of Nisiros : Mandraki,
and also the ancient castle, witch has magnificient views towards the islands of Kos and Yialos.
It was a wonderfull day, cruising the island on a moped,
Nisiros is simply beautifull !

31 oct. 2011 : SYMI - NISIROS
SYMI - Pali (NISIROS)
Weather : Sunny ca.20°C
Wind : NW 1-2 Bf
Last evening we had a nice tasty dinner at "O Meraklis" in Symi (105 Euro/6 pers.),
it wasn't cold at all, so we had our dinner outside.
Today we made the long trip to Nisiros, ca. 37 NM.
Unfortunately there wasn't much wind so we almost had to motor-sail the entire way.
At 15.45h we moored in he small harbour of Pali at Nisiros,
there are only 4 yachts in the harbour at the moment.
Over the last 2 years they rebuild the harbour, with new quays and a new entrance.
Tommorow we're gonna rent some motorbikes and visit the volcano on this island.

Argo crew

30 oct. 2011 : BOZUK BUKU - SYMI
BOZUK BUKU - SYMI
Weather : Sunny ca.20°C
Wind : NW 3 Bf
In morning we walked up to the ruins of the old castle of ancient Loryma,
it's a nice view from up there.
Afterwards we were served some Turkish tea by Ali Baba.
At 10.45h we left the bay.
It was a tight reach to get to Symi,
we had to reef the genua and of course tack a lot,
because the wind was coming from the NW.
Again it was a nice day of sailing (ca.23 N.M.),
it was sunny with no clouds.
At 15.45h we anchored stern to on the quay in Symi,
there are only 7 yachts moored in this beautifull harbour.
This evening we're gonna search a nice Greek taverna for dinner.

29 okt. 2011 : Rhodos - Bozuk Buku
Weather : Sunny ca.21°C
Wind : NW 1-2 Bf increasing to NW 3-4 Bf.
After an early flight, we arrived at the Mandraki-harbour at 10.00h.
The weather is sunny with ca.20°C, nice autumnweather.
It's definitively after-season, because today there are only 4
charteryachts checking-in, the last yachts of this year !
After the check-in of our yacht (Bavaria 40 Cruiser "ARGO"), we left
the harbour at 13.00h.
The first our there wasn't much wind but afterwards the wind picked-up
and we had a very nice sail,
at 17.15h we moored at Ali Baba's pontoon in the bay of Bozuk Buku
(Bozukale) in Turkey.
It's the first pontoon when you enter the bay, under the ruins of the
old castle, there are 6 yachts moored here.
Ali Baba made us a simple, but tasty dinner (ca.20 Euro pp).
Tommrow Symi is our destination.

29 July 2011
POROS/GALATAS 23-30 July 2011
Weather : Sunny ca.38°C
After a week of sailing we decided to stay an extra week in an
apartment with swimmingpool in Galatas, opposite from Poros on the mainland,
an ideal combination when sailing with children :
1 week sailing + 1 week hotel/apartment.
From the 'Villa SEAGULL'S VIEW' we have a magnificent view of Poros, etc.
From our balcony we can see the South-quay of Poros-city,
there's also the quay of Greek Sails located.
Concerning Greek Sails ;
We were positively surprised by this family-run business.
All their yachts are very well kept in chape under own maintenance.
When sailing the Saronic/Argolic, you gain 2 days when starting from
Poros, instead to starting from eg. Kalamaki in Athens.
... when we arrived at Athens-Airport we took the X96-bus to Piraeus
(1 hour drive),
in Piraeus we took the Flying Cat to Poros (ca.70 min).
So it takes ca. 3 hours to arrive in Poros from Athens-Airport
(depending of time of arrival),
there's also a shuttle-service that can be provided by Greek Sails.
So I think Greek Sails have the ideal base when sailing the Argo-Saronic !
NB
TIP for the long-term-sailors,
in Galatas there's a LIDL-supermarket, ca. 1km West out of town on the
road to Methana/Epidavros.
Adio from Poros/Galatas,
Koen & Co
24 July 2011
22th July : HYDRA - POROS
Weather : Sunny ca.37°C
Wind : NNW 1-2 Bf increasing to NW 3 Bf in the afternoon.
Our last sailingday.
The ladies went shopping again in the morning ...
So, men beware ! Hide your creditcards for your wives, when you come
to Hydra ;-D
At noon we hauled anchor to set course for Poros,
again there was nearly no wind.
In Poros we anchored for lunch and swimming in Monastery-Bay,
the bay is only suitable for a swim-stop, I think most of the time
it's to uncomfortable for a nightstay.
At 1800h we went to the Greek-Sails-quay,
we were friendly welcomed by the G.S.team.
At night we had dinner at the Poseidon-taverna (close to the new Ferry-harbour),
they have a wide choice of delicious plates at normal prices.
Adio from Poros,
Zita, Kithana, Miek, Sandra, Steven, Daniela & Koen
21th July : SPETSES - HYDRA
Weather : Sunny ca.39°C
Wind : NW 3 Bf decreasing to W 1 Bf in the afternoon and evening.
Because the waves made it to uncomfortable we decided to leave Or.
Zoyioryia early in the morning.
So we arrived at 11.30h at Hydra.
Altough we arrived early, there were only 3 places left.
Hydra is one of the most beautifull harbours in Greece, but
unfortunately also one of the most popular.
The harbourfee for a 36 foot yacht is 1,60 Euro pro night !
(for ca. 300 litres water we payed 7 Euro, ... ask for Pan)
Because of the heat, we went swimming in the afternoon,
to the East from the harbour they made some swimming-stages in the
rocks, a simple and effective solution.
At night the ladies did some shopping,
there are a lot of stores in the alleys of Hydra-town.
Kalispera,
Koen & Co
